Biography

Edit

Michael Sembello is a US-born guitarist, best known for the chart topper “Maniac”. He wrote and performed the track which was used in the film Flashdance.

Sembello learned to play the guitar in his youth, and he got his break in his late teens when he successfully auditioned for Stevie Wonder’s touring band. As his reputation spread he became an in-demand session man, and played for artists including Sergio Mendes, Randy Crawford and David Sanborn.

He released his debut Bossa Nova Hotelin 1983. The album contained the track “Maniac” which was picked for the film Flashdance. The single was included on the film’s soundtrack album, which has since had multi-platinum sales and won a Grammy. In addition to Flashdance he has written and performed soundtracks for other films, including Rocky IV and Independence Day.

Sembello has always been influenced by music from around the world, and formed a jazz fusion partnership, The Bridge, with musicians from South and Latin America. In addition to playing, he has written material for other artists, including Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Art Garfunkel.
