Biography

Edit

The Oscar Wilde of indie-rock, Steven Patrick Morrissey was born in 1959 near Manchester, England. The sophisticated crooner's parents were first generation, working class Irish Catholic immigrants. In between leaving school and starting the fabulous and successful indie band the Smiths, Morrissey created two fanzines, one for the New York Dolls and the other for James Dean. His solo career has been a rocky but logical extension of the Smiths, who disbanded in 1987 after a falling out between Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr.

Morrissey Fans Searched for Meat

Jul, 13 2011

Morrissey has been in the news twice this week, quite a change for the oft-introverted former Smith’s front man. Morrissey, a strict vegetarian, last week was attacked by man’s best friend and reportedly suffered a broken finger after being bitten by a dog. Now from the NME comes news that fans at Moz’s July 8 performance in the UK’s Middlesbrough Town Hall were searched upon entry for meat products. Certainly some fans have been known to tuck a flask in their jackets, sneak a joint into a show, but I’ve never heard of someone smuggling animal protein into a concert. Actually, that’s not true; I once discovered a Dick’s cheeseburger in my purse during a Pearl Jam show at Seattle’s Key Arena, but it was surreptitiously placed there by a friend. And anyone who’s been to Dick’s might understand wanting a spare for later. I digress… Apparently Morrissey’s realm of vegetarianism extends quite far, and he insists that venues in which he performs are meat-free. Said concert-goer Mel Stokes, “I know that a few years ago Morrissey stopped a gig because someone was throwing sausages at him. And they have removed burger vans from his gigs in the past, so it was obviously down to that again.” The Meat Is Murder singer apparently insisted, earlier this year, that Belgian music festival Lokerse Feesten, ban all meat from the site on the day he is due to perform. -Court

Bigmouth Morrissey Strikes Again

Sep, 5 2010

Morrissey has let his tongue slip again, describing the Chinese as a "subspecies" due to their attitude to animal rights, in an interview with The Guardian. Speaking to poet Simon Armitage, Morrissey was disparaging about other singers and chart musicians, but he reserved his harshest words for the 1.3 billion people of China. "Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare?" he said. "Absolutely horrific. You can't help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies." Morrissey is a well known animal lover, and loose talker. The Smiths' second album was called Meat Is Murder, and last year he walked off stage at Coachella because he could smell cooking meat. He's also had to deny allegations of racism before, having written songs with names such as "Asian Rut" and "National Front Disco," and frequently criticized the levels of immigration into Britain. Morrissey released a statement after his recent comment was published, saying "If anyone has seen the horrific and unwatchable footage of the Chinese cat and dog trade – animals skinned alive – then they could not possibly argue in favour of China as a caring nation. There are no animal protection laws in China and this results in the worst animal abuse and cruelty on the planet. It is indefensible."

Maudlin Morrissey Laments Life, Again

Dec, 20 2009

Morrissey has apologized to fans for his latest album just seven weeks after it was released. The former Smiths singer accepted that Swords, a compilation of recent b-sides and a bonus live CD, was a mistake. “I am sorry that Swords was such a meek disaster,” he wrote on a fan site. “It was proposed and accepted as a budget-priced CD, yet emerged everywhere as the most expensive CD in the racks.” The L.A.-based indie icon also lamented the state of the music industry, and praised the staff of an English hospital. "The world of music is purely market-driven,” he wrote. "Talent or merit or songs do not enter the equation for a split second; the campaign is the thing, the campaign is what is discussed amongst the public.” He confirmed that his contract with Universal has finished, and said that “record label interest is zero,” but maintained enough perspective to give thanks to those who helped him on the night he collapsed on-stage. ”I spent the night at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon where the staff restored my faith in humanity,” he said. “I had no idea such kindness existed.”
