Biography

Edit

Dante Terell Smith, known as Mos Def, is an American rapper and actor. His biggest musical successes were the album he made with Talib Kweli, Black Star (1998), and his debut solo album Black On Both Sides (1999). Both albums were critically acclaimed and together they established Mos Def as one of alternative hip-hop's biggest new stars. However, his second and third solo albums, The New Danger (2004) and True Magic (2006), were heavily criticised by reviewers. His music may have suffered because his attention had been drawn to acting, and in the time between Black On Both Sides and The New Danger Mos Def had pursued that instead. Before his music, a young Smith's biggest role had been as Bill Cosby's sidekick in The Cosby Mysteries. After Black On Both Sides, he played several roles on TV programs and in films such as Brown Sugar, The Italian Job and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Mos Def

Nov, 8 2008

Most of us would like to be famous, but if celebrities could ever agree on one thing they all hate, it'd surely be the hassle of being followed by baying mobs of snapping paparazzi. Amy Winehouse has a fleet of photographers camped outside her house, Sienna Miller is suing a group of paparazzi for harassment, Britney Spears has started a feature on her blog called 'the PapaRAZZIEs' which lampoons "the most outrageous and ridiculous pap moment" of each week, and Kanye West was arrested at LAX in September for trashing the expensive camera of a pap in hot pursuit. It all got too much for rapper and actor Mos Def too, who allegedly wrestled a camera from a photographer in a Las Vegas hotel in August, broke it, and then walked off with it, because he assumed the man was taking photos of him. He wasn't -- he was an official photographer for a clothing convention which was taking place at the hotel -- and now the Nevada police have issued an arrest warrant so they can speak to Mos. It seems it's not just photographers that snap.
