Indie Is Becoming the New Major
Dec, 7 2010
When the nominations for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were announced last week, independent music labels and artists received 273 of the 542 of the nominations - just over 50%. Continuing a trend from last year, independent releases were nominated in 88 of the 108 Grammy categories, including top categories Album of the Year The Suburbs on Merge and Best New Artist Mumford & Sons on Glassnote Records.
Several categories were dominated by indies, including Best Pop Instrumental Album, Best Electronic/Dance Album, Best Latin Rock Album, and all of the Jazz, Classical, Reggae, Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, and Folk categories.
But with the abundance of bigger name artists negotiating their own vanity labels, is this statistic being skewed? What about huge acts – Paul McCartney or Herbie Hancock - that have left the majors; are they, too, considered indie? Or one of the Big Four label groups who have spun off indie imprints? While we’re all for music however it is released, it seems a discussion of what constitutes an indie artist or label should be introduced into the ongoing conversation.
