Stranger Than Fiction Friday: Muse Wants to Record in Space
Jul, 8 2011
No doubt it’s a tough nut to crack, finding new ways to market and promote a band’s new album, but being the first band to record in space is a pretty strong pitch. This is the dream of Matt Bellamy, front man for British psychedelic rock band, Muse.
The trio has expressed a desire to Richard Branson to book a flight on his commercial intergalactic flight when the scheme takes off, according to Contactmusic. "We're trying to blag a free trip on it [Virgin Galactic]. I'm going to try to convince Richard Branson to let us make a music video or record a song up there. I think that would be cool. Would I be scared? I think I'll be alright," said Bellamy.
After a recent tour stop in Moscow, Russian fans bestowed up him a telescope having been aware of Bellamy’s interest in astronomy. "The crowd in Moscow were probably the most intense we've ever had. They were going mental and they bought me a big telescope."
He enthused, "It's a big, real, serious piece. I set it up when I got home and looked at the moon. F**king hell, have you ever looked at the moon through a telescope? It's all mountains and stuff, it's unbelievable."

Supermassive Muse Set To Shrink
Sep, 12 2010
As rock trio Muse have got bigger in terms of fame, they've also got bigger in musical terms: when compared to the bombastic guitars and grand themes of their more recent records, their debut Showbiz (1999) is almost coy. The stages they've played have got bigger and they've learned how to fill them, but lead singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy says that they're about to hit a limit.
"I feel like we can't go much bigger in terms of the kinds of concerts we're playing," he said in an interview with Time Out ahead of two stadium shows in London. "Weirdly, that seems to have coincided with my personal life destabilising about a year ago. I split from a relationship... I was doing lots of self-analysing."
He also thought that this change in direction may allow Muse to elect to play more intimate shows. "I sense that that's going to lead to a writing project that will be more personal, rather than talking about grand political concerns," he said. "That itself might lead to material that's more suitable for smaller venues."

Muse Sell Their Souls For Twilight
Jul, 15 2010
Having contributed tracks to all three of the Twilight movie soundtracks, Muse are surprisingly still a little uncertain about their decision. Speaking to the BBC, bassist Chris Wolstenholme described the move as “a bit like selling your soul,” but agreed that allying themselves with one of the biggest franchises in popular culture has had its benefits. "I'm not sure how cool it is to be on those kind of things,” he admitted, “but sometimes you've just got to get your music out there in different ways.”
Muse have released five studio albums, the last three of which have achieved multi-platinum status across Britain, Australia and Europe, but the Twilight maneuver has the potential to increase the band’s exposure in the US. Despite reaching No.3 on the Billboard 200 with latest album The Resistance, they’ve achieved no better than gold certification from the RIAA so far.
Looking forward, Muse say they will start work on a new studio album in 2011, but not until the three weary members have had a vacation. “I think the most time we've had off is about six weeks in the last twelve years,” Wolstenholme said, “so we're due a break.”

Reports on the Muse official forum have confirmed that the band have started work on their follow-up to 2006’s platinum-seller, Black Holes and Revelations. A post on Dominic Howard’s blog confirmed that they were “back in Devon working on a symphonic monster”; a statement echoed by Matt Bellamy’s comments that part of the album may be “a new song in three parts, more of a symphony than a song, which I have been working on sporadically for many years." This suggests that the stadium-filling band has not taken the ‘overblown’ criticism levelled at the band’s last release too much to heart. Reports indicate that the new album should hit the stores in late 2009, early 2010.

Nominations are out for the annual Q Awards, one of Britain’s largest musical ego-stroking ceremonies. The host, Q magazine, beloved of Top 100 List fans everywhere, is one of the country’s largest music publications, representing the biggest and most popular rock and pop acts in the game. No surprise then, that Muse find themselves nominated for ‘Best Act In The World Today’ – a nomination which could potentially result in their fifth Q Award in five years. This year the competition for the lauded title includes Oasis, Coldplay, Metallica and Kings of Leon, and given the number of fans baying for a new release, many would agree with Q that a Muse win is a pretty safe bet.
