Biography

Edit

In the early 1990s Matthew Bellamy (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion) attended the same college in Teignmouth, Devon and created a band that would eventually rock stadiums.

Their early path was not easy. After plenty of well received gigs and a couple of EPs Muse were still finding it difficult to be taken seriously by the British record industry who maintained that their style was too derivative, earning them comparisons with Radiohead. The American industry was keen to accept them though, and they facilitated world wide record deals for them, resulting in the release of Showbiz in 1999. Showbiz opened the door to prestigious support gigs. Momentum gathered.

Origin of Symmetry was released in 2001 to reserved praise, although, surprisingly considering their earlier championing of the band, the Americans decided not to release the album, fearing it was not sufficiently radio friendly. It was finally released in the US in 2005.

Hullabaloo, predominantly a collection of live tracks and B sides, was released in 2002 and was followed in 2003 by Absolution. This album showcased their increasingly individualistic orchestral, rich sound, which, when coupled with a driving rock edge, finally catapulted them away from the Radiohead comparisons which had blighted their early career. Its apocalyptic message reflected Bellamy's fascination with conspiracy theories, science and space and it was this album which brought the band considerable critical acclaim.

Black Holes and Revelations was released in 2006 to an eager fanbase and during the resultant tour in 2007 Muse played for two nights to a 75,000 capacity audience in the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium. Surely this cements the assertion that Muse have made Devon famous for something more than cream teas?

Stranger Than Fiction Friday: Muse Wants to Record in Space

Jul, 8 2011

No doubt it’s a tough nut to crack, finding new ways to market and promote a band’s new album, but being the first band to record in space is a pretty strong pitch. This is the dream of Matt Bellamy, front man for British psychedelic rock band, Muse. The trio has expressed a desire to Richard Branson to book a flight on his commercial intergalactic flight when the scheme takes off, according to Contactmusic. "We're trying to blag a free trip on it [Virgin Galactic]. I'm going to try to convince Richard Branson to let us make a music video or record a song up there. I think that would be cool. Would I be scared? I think I'll be alright," said Bellamy. After a recent tour stop in Moscow, Russian fans bestowed up him a telescope having been aware of Bellamy’s interest in astronomy. "The crowd in Moscow were probably the most intense we've ever had. They were going mental and they bought me a big telescope." He enthused, "It's a big, real, serious piece. I set it up when I got home and looked at the moon. F**king hell, have you ever looked at the moon through a telescope? It's all mountains and stuff, it's unbelievable." Supermassive Muse Set To Shrink

Sep, 12 2010

As rock trio Muse have got bigger in terms of fame, they've also got bigger in musical terms: when compared to the bombastic guitars and grand themes of their more recent records, their debut Showbiz (1999) is almost coy. The stages they've played have got bigger and they've learned how to fill them, but lead singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy says that they're about to hit a limit. "I feel like we can't go much bigger in terms of the kinds of concerts we're playing," he said in an interview with Time Out ahead of two stadium shows in London. "Weirdly, that seems to have coincided with my personal life destabilising about a year ago. I split from a relationship... I was doing lots of self-analysing." He also thought that this change in direction may allow Muse to elect to play more intimate shows. "I sense that that's going to lead to a writing project that will be more personal, rather than talking about grand political concerns," he said. "That itself might lead to material that's more suitable for smaller venues."
