The winning formula of My Chemical Romance (MCR) is a mixture of four totally different styles, Gothic/British vocal and lyric, "Sonic youth"-ish type of rhythm guitar, neck-breaking "Metal"-ish guitar solo, and punk/emo rhythm, and this album (their second album and first major label release) show what is the best answer they can work out from the formula.

This 13 tracks disc is a combination of strong melodies, smart and exciting arrangement, breath-taking guitar solo, the mix-up of emo/punk rhythm and guitar solo is refeshing and sucessful twist, they sucessfully made turn and twist and stop, nothing really innovative here, but they just combined things that we already knew in smart and effective ways, in order to push and pull listeners to different climax and scenes, and the "Romeo and Juliet" inspired lyrics are sentimental and powerful, listen to "Thank You for the Venom", "I Never Told You What I Do for a Living", "Helena" and their first single "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", you might feel weird at first, but you'll find yourselves singing their tunes while you have nothing to do soon.

My Chemical Romance is probably the best hybrid of the Cure, Sisters Of Mercy, and the voice of Geddy Lee on vocals that I've probably heard in my relatively short life. Actually a hybrid such as that sounds pretty good, but My Chemical Romance is a far cry of the comparison I've put on paper, or the internet. As I've said MCR (I'm going to do initials because every time I see an emo kid's wet dream for a name I want to cringe) comes across as a bit of a parody of the Cure and Sisters of Mercy (who definitely weren't too good to even begin with). One positive thing to point out that MCR are most definitely hip and dress well, they'd probably win a best dressed list if they showed up to a Norwegian heavy metal awards show, that or they would get a blanket party. MCR are most likely going to burn out all their money like a lot of their fellow bands that have caught the glimpse of fame, not from drugs, but by purchasing the whole of makeup from some evil twin of Clinique. A lot of whining and screaming ensues on this album, which is supposed to elicit some sympathy on the part of the listener, which is understandable because they are probably trying to score with some girls of the caring hot topic vulture variety. That kind of whining I could respect, because it results in a markedly less outcome, being with the ladies. But MCR's music isn't even directed towards the ladies and even actually sounds sincere and not an act at times. This makes me wonder why they demand this sympathy because nothing in their music consist of any narrative of a broken childhood, the album's just filled with some allusions to some obscure issue from a Dark Horse comic book and some shoutouts to faux vampires. So there being nothing to really sympathize with them for, I looked in the liner notes, and realized it was their hair, those are some pretty bad haicuts. Their haircuts look somewhat comparable to what kind of cut Lorena Bobbitt would deliver to her husband if she were aiming at his hair instead of his package. It would probably be a more terrible end as a bad haircut could result in the loss of a job at a business while a nationwide story about the loss of one's manhood receives national sympathy. Anyway, their music is some kind of conglomeration of opera and emo. By opera I don't mean actual opera, but the Green Day - American Idiot styled opera. And by emo I don't mean like Rites of Spring or The Smiths but like Green Day - Good Riddance styled emo. I had the misfortune of working at the theater and hearing the song Helena over and over again and it made me wonder if the song or the Paris Hilton vehicle House Of Wax it was playing on was, I decided to go for a tie then, now I'm thinking the song is worse. I criticized MCR's lyrics about vampires in a previous album but I'm going to have to do it again. I do particularly recall any specific instances of talk about vampires, but they seem to throw the word around like insurgents throw grenades, heavily. I hope MCR are aware that vampires do not exist anymore. I think they died out in the ice age slightly before the mammoth, that was a long time ago. MCR need to move on, get past this infatuation with vampires and committing intimate acts with them. This album definitely is worthy of the big 1.
