Biography

Edit

Natalie Cole began her career seeking to distinguish herself from the music of her late father, Nat "King" Cole. Her earlier music was contemporary R&B and pop, and she achieved five R&B chart-toppers between 1975 and 1979, as well as four gold and two platinum-selling albums. After overcoming drug problems in the early 80s, she returned with a willingness to acknowledge her father's musical legacy: the double platinum Everlasting (1987) included a cover of his signature song "When I Fall In Love". Her most successful album was Unforgettable… With Love (1991), an album of Nat King Cole covers. By sampling her father's vocals and singing around them on the title track, Natalie was seemingly able to duet with her late father. "Unforgettable" won Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the Grammys, while the album won the coveted Album of the Year award, and sold over seven million copies in the US alone. Cole continued to record smooth jazz-influenced pop albums, and enjoyed a brief renaissance when "Livin' For Love" topped the US Dance chart in 2000.

Natalie Cole

May, 24 2009

Grammy winning singer Natalie Cole is recuperating after undergoing a successful kidney transplant operation. The 59 year old singer had been receiving dialysis three times a week since last September after a combination of hepatitis C and chemotherapy treatment damaged her own kidneys. Only recently, Cole discussed her need for a transplant when she appeared on the Larry King Show. The broadcast resulted in a flood of letters from the public offering donations, though the organ itself was found through the organ procurement agency One Legacy. Throughout her health problems Natalie had continued to tour in support of her new album Still Unforgettable and said of her work ethic: “I'm committed to working. I'm a fighter, not a chump. The timing is intense. The album is special to me, and here I am sick. But you know the saying: These are the best of times and the worst of times. So we'll barrel through.” The music will stop while she recovers from the surgery, but with that attitude there’s every likelihood that as soon as it’s humanly possible, Ms Cole will ensure that the show will go on.

Sometimes the goodwill shown by fans towards musicians is astonishing: when Natalie Cole revealed on Larry King Live this week that she would soon need a kidney transplant, the show was deluged with e-mails from fans offering to donate theirs. Humans only need one of our two kidneys to function normally, but donating a spare still involves a major operation, and an increased risk if the donor's remaining kidney ever begins to fail. On the show, Cole explained that she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C last year, probably caused by her sharing needles whilst addicted to heroin in the early 80s. Now she has to visit hospital three times a week for dialysis, which was "not a life and death situation" she said, but a far-from-perfect one, so a transplant was the preferred treatment. Before the interview had even ended, King was able to show Cole e-mails from fans wishing to help. Visibly shocked, she said "There are some great human beings out there. That's all I can say."
