Edit

Ne-Yo is a US-born R&B singer-songwriter, producer and actor. His short career has to date earned him two platinum discs.

His own releases have done as well - his debut album In My Own Words went straight to No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 and was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album at The Grammys, while the follow-up Because Of You sold over one million copies and has also received award nominations.

Ne-Yo

Sep, 15 2008

Ne-Yo is getting ready to release his third album, Year of the Gentleman, this Tuesday, and it'd take a brave (or foolish) man to predict it debuting anywhere other than top of the album charts. His previous two LPs, In My Own Words (2006) and Because Of You (2007), both topped the charts in their first week of release, and Ne-Yo shows no signs of slowing down now. Because Of You won the Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album and though Ne-Yo lost out on four other nominations, his recent single "Closer" has been one of his biggest hits yet. It peaked at No.8 on the Hot 100, but reached the pinnacle of both the Hot Dance Airplay and Club Play charts, as well as the British overall singles chart. Then again, with a new album also due from Nelly, and Metallica's Death Magnetic sure to keep doing well in its second week, it's perhaps neither brave nor foolish to predict at least a tight race.

June was a month of mixed fortunes for Ne-Yo. After being arrested for speeding without a license in February, the R&B star was sentenced to 24 hours community service on June 2nd. But on Sunday, his new single Closer hit No.1 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his second British chart-topper. Third album Year of the Gentleman, due for release on August 5th, will feature collaborations with Rihanna and Nas, and production from Kanye West, amongst others. Closer has peaked at No.25 on the US Hot 100, but is sure to rise further.
