For Sale: Nine Inch Nails, Mint Condition
Dec, 1 2009
Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor wasn't kidding when he said the band were giving up touring: they're making the possibility of a future tour much harder for themselves by selling all their instruments and equipment on eBay. Most bands let their unused equipment gather dust when they give up, but Reznor is letting fans get their hands on hundreds of his band's "guitars, keyboards, amplifiers, drums, staging, anvil cases, cables, rack/outboard gear, guitar effects, and pedal boards." A post on NIN's official website says that "hundreds of items will be listed over the next several weeks," but at the time of writing only 20 guitars have been listed so far. An Eclipse model Les Paul-style guitar painted with The Fragile cover is currently standing at $2,300 with six days remaining; clearly NIN will make a lot of money from selling hundreds of items. "I've just reached the point ... where [touring] has invaded every other aspect of my life," Reznor said in July. He's now thought to be working on studio material, collaborations, and non-musical projects.

Recent reports suggest that the end of Nine Inch Nails is nigh, at least for a while. A post from Trent Reznor on the NIN website entitled “A note from Trent and a wave goodbye” states that he’s “been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while… After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year”. The tour is planned with Jane’s Addiction, though no dates are confirmed yet. But for every face that disappears from the musical stage, an old one resurfaces. Most recently we hear rumors of a rekindled collaboration between country giants Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, a new album in the pipeline from Mr “Bat out of Hell” Meatloaf, the lauded return of blink-182 and the promise of a reunion from 80s band, Spandau Ballet. Sometimes it seems there’s no such thing as retirement in the recording industry, which all suggests that fans of NIN shouldn’t give up just yet.

Two months ago Nine Inch Nails released a 36-track instrumental album Ghosts I-IV in five different formats and costs - from a limited free download, to a limited edition $300 deluxe package. Now they've released another new record, The Slip, available for free legal download from NIN's official website. With nearly 50 new tracks released in 8 weeks, NIN have already been more productive than Portishead managed in 15 years - but more importantly, is it any good?

Not content with jumping on the free download bandwagon with the digital release of part of Ghosts I-IV in March, Trent Reznor unleashed a new Nine Inch Nails single on radio stations across America on April 21. Within hours of being mastered, "Discipline" was available for free download on the band’s website. A further download offering is expected in early May prompting comments that Reznor is relishing the new-found creative freedom associated with shedding his record label.
