Overview Edit

Nevermind is the second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind was the group's first release on DGC Records. Frontman Kurt Cobain sought to make music outside of the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing influence from groups such as the Pixies and their use of loud/quiet song dynamics.

Despite low commercial expectations by the band and its record label, Nevermind became a surprise success in late 1991, largely due to the popularity of its first single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit". By January 1992, it had replaced Michael Jackson's album Dangerous at number one on the Billboard charts. The Recording Industry Association of America has certified the album ten times platinum (10 million copies shipped) and has sold over 26 million copies worldwide. Nevermind was responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience, and critics subsequently regarded it as one of the best rock albums of all time.

5 stars Nirvana Nevermind Super Deluxe Boxset
Having listened to Nevermind in this remastered form (Super Deluxe Boxset), I must say it is quite good. The sound is very clear when compared to the 1991 CD. The volume has been slightly increased but it luckily is not a victim of the loudness wars. The Smart Sound Sessions tracks show the band's beginning and are decent sound quality but those versions are hardly essential. You won't find yourself using the repeat button. The Boombox Rehearsal tapes, although recorded on what appears to be a c…

2 stars How do you screw this up?
I have been listening to Nirvana since 92, collecting every thing I could, both official on non-official. My mouth was watering over this release since I now only buy vinyl records...but then I listened to it.

My main problem is with LP 1 (Nevermind Remastered) - This is the worst of it. Compared to my 2009 pressing, the cymbals have been nearly stripped of their presence. The beauty of Dave's crashing has been flattened down. It all sounds more like a badly mixed CD than a high quality vinyl. …

Trivia Edit

  • The Recording Industry Association of America has certified the album ten times platinum (10 million copies shipped), and the album has sold over 26 million copies worldwide.
  • Afforded a budget of $65,000, Nirvana recorded Nevermind at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California in May and June 1991.
  • Nevermind was mastered on the afternoon of August 2 at The Mastering Lab in Hollywood, California.
  • One of the mastered songs, a hidden track called "Endless, Nameless" intended to appear at the end of "Something in the Way", was accidentally left off initial pressings of the album.
  • Many of the songs written for Nevermind were about Cobain's dysfunctional relationship with Tobi Vail.
  • As recording sessions for the album were completed, Cobain suggested the new album be named Nevermind. Cobain liked the title because it was a metaphor for his attitude on life, and because it was grammatically incorrect.
  • The back cover of the album features a photograph of a rubber monkey in front of a collage created by Cobain. The collage features photos of raw beef from a supermarket advertisement, images from Dante's Inferno, and pictures of diseased vagina's from Cobain's collection of medical photos.
