Biography

Edit

There's little question that No Doubt are best remembered for hit singles like "Don't Speak" and "Just a Girl", which propelled their third album Tragic Kingdom to worldwide sales of over 15 million. They have also acted as the launching pad for lead singer Gwen Stefani's huge success as a solo artist.

No Doubt are a new wave ska-pop band formed in California in 1986 by John Spence and siblings Eric and Gwen Stefani. The band cut their teeth playing in Orange County area and saw several line-up changes before they were given a record contract and were ready to release their self-titled debut album in 1992. The public were not ready for their sound and the album was not a huge commercial success.

The band would have to wait until their third album Tragic Kingdom for a turning point. After a slow start the album made it into the Billboard 200 where it spent almost a year, including an eight week spell at No.1. With the release of the singles "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak" the album caught the world's attention and went on to sell around 16 million copies. It went on to be placed in Rolling Stone magazine's Greatest Albums of All Time list.

In 2000 the band released Return of Saturn which was well received critically but not as commercially successful as Tragic Kingdom. Nevertheless the album did open doors for Gwen Stefani who went on to collaborate with Moby on a track on his Play album.

In 2004 at the end of their tour with blink-182 the band decided to take a break to allow the members to pursue their own projects. The band have reformed to start work on their next album without Gwen Stefani.

Artists Angry Again At Activision Avatars

Nov, 6 2009

It was only weeks ago that that the miracle of modern video game technology made it possible for Kurt Cobain to be seen singing Bon Jovi, karaoke-style on Guitar Hero 5. Outraged Cobain fans, Courtney Love, the boys from Nirvana and even Bon Jovi themselves made their feelings known, but publishers Activision insisted they had secured the rights to use Cobain’s image. Now déjà vu is set to strike with Activision’s new game, Band Hero, facing similar criticisms. This time the band in question is No Doubt, who have filed a lawsuit against Activision arguing that the unrestricted use of the No Doubt avatars in Band Hero will turn the band into “virtual karaoke players.” Activision said they “…worked with No Doubt and the band’s management in developing Band Hero” and therefore have acted within their legal rights. But the band insist they never agreed to let avatars of themselves perform songs by other artists. In one example presented to court, they point out that having Gwen Stefani sing The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Woman” depicts her “boasting about having sex with prostitutes.” Band Hero also reportedly allows Taylor Swift and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine to be used as avatars throughout the game, but those artists have yet to voice any objections.
