Overview Edit

Only a Lad is the full-length debut album by Oingo Boingo, following their self-titled EP. The album's musical arrangements, by vocalist Danny Elfman and guitarist Steve Bartek, complete the group's switch from a cabaret act to a New Wave band (see Oingo Boingo - The Mystic Knights Years). Only a Lad features complex and frequently changing time signatures and keys, often incorporating harmonies borrowed from jazz and 20-century classical music, all hallmarks of Elfman's songwriting.

The album's success was somewhat limited, but, largely due to the backing of Los Angeles radio station KROQ, the album established Oingo Boingo as a permanent fixture in the Southern California music scene.

The National Review Online called "Capitalism" one of the "50 greatest conservative rock songs."

"Only a Lad" is a playable track on the PlayStation 2 video game Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s.

5 stars Classic Oingo Boingo
This is one of the hallmark albums of the "New Wave" era. With this recording OB jumped onto the music scene with a mix of upbeat high energy ska-punk music and brooding lyrics about middle class S. California life.

This is one of my favorite OB recordings. This CD marked the beginning of Danny Elfman's best writing.

If you want to know what true OB sounds like, this is one of the albums to own (along with "Nothing To Fear" and "Good for Your Soul").

1 stars Only A Buffoon
Trying to sit through this album is like getting root canal. It's absolutely horrible! The singing is bad enough, but the music sounds like it was taken from a circus soundtrack and then spead up. How this band ever got a record contract is beyond me?
