Ozomatli were formed in LA in 1995. The group, made up of performers from diverse backgrounds, reflect the melting pot that is LA. Their music is a mix of jazz, funk and Latin/Caribbean styles. They include social messages in their music and work with other sympathetic artists including members of the Soulquarian collective.
They released their self-titled debut album in 1998 to positive reviews, promoting it by supporting Santana on his Supernatural tour. The bands' follow up, released on 9/11/01, featured collaborations with artists including De La Soul, Will. i. am and Common. The album won the Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative album.
As a response to the circumstances surrounding 9/11 the band deliberately included North African and Arabic influences in their music. Despite potential critical backlash, the resulting album Street Signs was included in the 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die book and won the band the Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative album for a second time.
Ozomatli released another album to positive reviews in 2007, and continue to tour.
