Cowboys from Hell is Pantera's fifth album and their first Atco Records album, recorded at The Dallas Sound Lab in Irving, TX and released on July 24, 1990. This was their first commercially successful album, exposing the band's groove metal style to mainstream audiences.

Like all instruments, playing the guitar is an art form. It takes a lot of time and patience to understand and learn. Many try, but few succeed. Those who do succeed have either learned from someone else, or they are simply born with "God-given talent." Pantera is one of those bands you either love or hate. Prior to Cowboys from Hell they spent many years honing their chops on classic Priest inflicted speed metal. Cowboys From Hell virtually sheds all indication of this, inciting many to accuse them of hiding their past.

The main problem with CFH is Terry Date's flat production, a Pantera trademark. The riffs seem heavy enough, but annoying trebley guitar tones and virtually nonexistent bass bogs them down. Vinny Paul is a decent drummer but ha…
