Led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Paul Weller, The Jam were a commercially successful and critically acclaimed British new wave band of the late 70s/early 80s. They had 18 consecutive singles in the Top 40 of the UK charts, and their 'mod' image led to a minor revival of the subcultural style.
Weller then went on to form the distinctly soul-influenced The Style Council, who enjoyed four Top Ten albums in the UK (including the chart-topping Our Favourite Shop (1985)), and seven Top Ten singles. They split up after their 1989 album Modernism: A New Decade was rejected by their record label.
In the 90s, Weller returned with a solo career just as The Jam's influence on new bands was becoming apparent. Solo albums like Wild Wood (1993) and Stanley Road (1995) proved hugely successful, and prominent Britpop groups like Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene declaring themselves to be fans.
The Jam's rythym section, Bruce Foxton (guitar, bass) and Rick Buckler (drums), recently announced their intention to tour again, playing Jam material and new songs. So far Weller has resisted the temptation to complete the reformation.
