Probably best known for her huge hit single "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone", Paula Cole is a multi-talented singer-songwriter who is anything but a one trick pony. Cole grew-up in Rockport, Massachusetts, her father was an entomologist and part-time polka musician, her mother an artist. After graduation from Rockport High School, Cole went on to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study. In 1994 she released her debut album Harbringer on the now defunct label, Imago Records. The label folded and the album was never properly promoted and in the days before the internet that meant death to an album.
After Imago failed, Cole secured a contract with Warner Bros. Records and in the autumn of 96 she released her biggest selling album to date, This Fire. The album would eventually reach multi-platinum selling status and produce several huge hit singles among them "I Don't Want to Wait" which would become the theme song for the popular teen drama Dawson's Creek; "Feelin' Love", from the film, and subsequent multi-million copy selling sound track for, City of Angels; and her massive and always recognizable hit song "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone". This Fire was nominated for five Grammy awards and winning the Best New Artist award.
After releasing This Fire Cole toured with Lilith Fair then decided to take a hiatus to have, and begin raising, a daughter. Then in 1999 she released her critically acclaimed third album Amen however it failed to find an audience and sold less than 200 thousand copies. Although Cole recorded a fourth album the label refused to release it and Cole took a forced break from releasing albums until 2007 when, on her new label Decca Records, she released her fourth studio album Courage to strong critical praise.
