Overview Edit

No Code is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on August 27, 1996 through Epic Records. Following a troubled tour for its previous album, Vitalogy (1994), in which Pearl Jam engaged in a much-publicized boycott of Ticketmaster, the band went into the studio to record its follow-up. The music on the record was even more diverse than what the band had done on previous releases, incorporating elements of garage rock, worldbeat, and experimentalism.

Although No Code debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, it left a large section of the band’s fanbase unsatisfied and quickly fell down the charts. The album became the first Pearl Jam album to not reach multi-platinum status. The album has been certified platinum by the RIAA in the United States.

No Code would be the band's last album to reach #1 in the US until the 2009 album Backspacer.

5 stars UNDERRATED GEM!
I remember getting this disc as a birthday present the year it came out. Much like the cover artwork, at first it seemed weird and too jumpy, but after repeated listens, it all started to fall in place.

While I'm admittedly not the biggest Pearl Jam fan out there, my comments may seem a bit worthless to bigger fans, But...this album is a masterpiece. It's dark, moody, eerie, ambient, reflective, searching, brutal and peaceful all at the same time, which leads me to some degree to believe that th…

3 stars Great songs, poorly sequenced
Few musicians seem to resent--nay, to hate--the spotlight as much as Eddie Vedder, and this album at times feels like a calculated attempt to run away from it.

It's not the songs that do this--they're often great, especially fan favorites like "Hail, Hail" and "Off He Goes." No, it's the sequencing, which leaves the listener feeling like an airline passenger buffeted by heavy turbulence. The slow-fast-slow-fast order doubtless turned many fans away and left them rooting through their Case Logic…
