Overview Edit

"Face Value" is the 1981 début solo album by Genesis drummer turned lead singer Phil Collins. Produced jointly by Collins himself and engineer/producer Hugh Padgham, the album features several songs that drew inspiration from the marital problems (i.e an impending divorce from his first wife) that he was dealing with at the time. The album was also notable for its variety of musical styles (incorporating funk, R&B and jazz elements), the inclusion of the Phenix Horns (the regular brass section for R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire) on several tracks and the use of drum machines (notably on the hugely successful single "In The Air Tonight"), even though Collins was a highly regarded drummer. The album was a major commercial success, topping the album charts in the UK and several other European countries and reaching number 7 on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 (selling over 5 million copies there) and spawning 3 UK hit singles.

5 stars Phil's brilliant debut--eclecticism and terrific songwriting
Regardless of how much criticism Phil Collins has received over the years for his solo career and for "what he did to Genesis", serious music listeners know better, and Phil's timeless, remarkably eclectic solo debut "Face Value", which came out in early 1981, is a masterpiece. It's an album that makes good on the theory that an artist does their best work in times of personal turmoil. Phil simply began 'fooling around' as a means to comfort himself in the wake of a painful divorce. Apart from a…

3 stars Good, but not great.
This album begins with the fantasic song 'In the Air Tonight', with a song that good you'd expect an excellent album. Unfortunatly you only get a fair album that is a little slow. It still good, but 'In the Air Tonight' is a song that deserves a great album, not a good one. Don't mistake this for a bad review. I still like the album, but it could have been better.
