Overview Edit

The Wall is the eleventh studio album by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. It was released as a double album on 30 November 1979. It was subsequently performed live, with elaborate theatrical effects, and adapted into the film Pink Floyd The Wall.

As with their previous three studio albums, The Wall is a concept album. It deals largely with the theme of personal isolation, and was first conceived after an incident that occurred during the band's 1977 In the Flesh Tour, where Waters' frustration with the behaviour of the audience reached a point where he spat in the face of a fan near the stage. Waters would come to regret his actions and spoke of his desire to build a wall between himself and the audience. The Wall features a notably harsher and more theatrical style than their previous releases. Keyboardist Richard Wright left the band during production of the album, but returned to perform during later concert performances as a salaried musician.

The Wall is a rock opera that centres on the character Pink, who is largely based on the band's bassist and lyricist Roger Waters. Pink encounters obstacles throughout his life, beginning with the loss of his father during World War II, continuing with abuse from his schoolteachers, an overprotective mother, and the desertion of his wife – all of which factor into Pink's isolation from society, represented by the metaphorical "Wall" of the album title.

Hugely successful upon its release, The Wall was one of the best selling albums of 1980 in the United States and was Billboard magazine's number one album of 1980. It is one of the best-selling double albums of all time, and is in the top five best-selling albums of all time in the US.

5 stars For me, Floyd's best, and then some
Possibly the most controversial Floyd album save 'The Final Cut', this one. I'd argue it's also their best. It's a hefty album, but the music is fantastic, and it doesn't lose any value on repeat listening.

Unless you've been living on Mars for the last twenty-five years, you'll be familiar with 'Another Brick in the Wall Part 2' (famous as the least Christmassy Christmas no.1 ever) and 'Comfortably Numb' (recently covered in a totally different style by Scissor Sisters). Resist the temptation t…

2 stars Complete Rip Off - Should be titled "Submersion Edition"
The kind of person that buys this will almost certainly already own "The Wall" and "Is there anybody out there" - 4 of the 6 CDs. The 2 CDs of demos are interesting, in a deluxe edition sort of way - but certainly not worth an extra £50 or so over the experience edition (that includes 1 of the demo disks). Indeed the value added content in this box includes a few marbles (!!!!), some pictures and a couple of booklets (very limited compared with the wonderful Gerald Scarfe book - the Making of Pi…
