Overview Edit

Bossanova is the third album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in August 1990 on the English independent record label 4AD in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. All of Bossanovas original material was written by the band's frontman Black Francis; it marked the point where his artistic control over the band became absolute. The album's sound, inspired by surf and space rock, complements its lyrical focus on outer space, which references subjects such as aliens and unidentified flying objects.

Because of 4AD's independent status, major label Elektra Records handled distribution in the United States; however, Bossanova only reached number 70 on the Billboard 200. The album charted significantly higher in the United Kingdom, peaking at number three in the UK Albums Chart. Two singles were released from Bossanova, "Velouria" and "Dig for Fire"; both charted highly on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.

5 stars the pixies' greatest album (and that's saying something)
I, like many other young'uns, was introduced to the Pixies by the name-dropping habits of bands like Nirvana. After buying Doolittle, and scarfing up the rest of their releases, the rest of my CD collection has basically been rendered average. At first listen, Bossanova sounded rather dull compared to "Debaser," "Here Comes Your Man," and other perfect pop tunes off of Doolittle. But like any great album, it slowly but surely grows on you. Every listen will reveal a new quirk. "Cecilia Ann" gets…

3 stars Entertaining, but unimpressive after its mighty predecessor
BOSSANOVA, released in 1990, was the third album by the Pixies. Musically it continues the style of their previous release DOOLITTLE: a harsh tone matched to lush production, surf-rock allusions, lead vocals by Frank Black with all his weird lyrics and most songs lasting well under 3 minutes.

The instrumental "Cecilia Ann" is a fine opener, two minutes of power chords. "Rock Music" introduces Frank Black's vocals, but it's a bit of self-parody, as his hoarse screaming is unintelligible. "Velour…
