Overview Edit

In Absentia is the seventh studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree (Richard Barbieri, Colin Edwin, Gavin Harrison, Steven Wilson), first released on 24 September 2002. It was their first release on a major record label, Lava Records. It is Metal Storm's number 3 of the Top 20 albums of 2002 and number 42 on the Top 100 albums of all time. This album also marked the arrival of Gavin Harrison, who replaced Chris Maitland as their drummer/percussionist.

The album is also the first to have a heavier and more metal feel, through a transition from general psychedelic rock and trance.

5 stars Are there words for this?
This is perfection. I need to be careful to contain my enthusiasm about this album or my review will be nothing but a maudlin glorification heavy on superlatives but low on actual, uh, 'reviewing'. But...this is a masterpiece. That's enough for me, but I will go on...

It is a concept album, which seems to be trendy all of a sudden. I barely even care when I hear a band I like is making a concept album these days, although it used to get me excited. _In Absentia_ gets the thumbs-up though because…

3 stars Not prog rock but good
This ranges from heavy metal to accoustic rock and most of it is good. There is no song here that even hints at being prog rock in the ways of thr Flower Kings or earlier Yes. I don't know why they always show up as a prog band, they are not (not this cd anyway). But it is a good cd for other rock sounds.
