The success of alternative rockers Puddle of Mudd is attributable in part to Fred Durst who, after hearing a demo tape sent to him by Wes Scantlin, helped him to construct a band. Scantlin already had some songs ready to work on, having written them while in an earlier incarnation of the band - they had already released two minor label albums Stuck and Abrasive in 1994 and 1997.

The major label release was Come Clean which was released in 2001 and, on the strength of its lead single "Control" and later single "Blurry", met with huge success. It was triple platinum by 2003.

The follow-up album Life on Display was not nearly so successful, to the disappointment of drummer Greg Upchurch and guitarist Paul Philips who left after its release.
