Q-Tip Working On Miles Davis Play
Sep, 24 2010
Q-Tip has revealed he's working on a play about legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, in which he will play the lead role.
As part of seminal jazz-rap group A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip has always been known as a huge jazz fan, and he's been acting since the Oscar-nominated 1993 movie Poetic Justice (which also starred Janet Jackson and 2pac). Now he's combining both loves by taking on the role of Davis, probably the most influential jazz musician ever. "I relate to him," Q told XXL magazine. "But I was a little nervous at first. But we’ve already done some table readings [with] Miles’s nephew, and some of his really close friends... have checked out the table reading like, 'oh they nailed it.' So that made it easier for me. It let me know my instincts are right."
But Q doesn't know when the play will go public because he's got a lot of musical projects keeping him busy too. "I’m getting ready to work on stuff for Mary J. Blige" he told XXL. "Kanye and I are gonna continue to work together. We’re doing some stuff for Jay-Z’s new album that’s coming out in the spring, and then after Jay’s thing I’m gonna start recording my new album. Kanye should be working on that, too."
