Biography

Edit

Known also by the acronym QOTSA, Queens of the Stone Age are one of the most acclaimed and popular hard rock bands of the 21st century. They formed in the mid-90s around guitarist and singer Josh Homme, once of cult stoner-rock band Kyuss. Homme is the sole remaining founder member.

Their debut self-titled album (1998) and Rated R (2000) brought them warm reviews, and their growing fan-base was swelled by energetic live shows across Europe and America. Especially popular was Rated R's first single, "Feel Good Hit of the Summer", which led to crowds enthusiastically chanting a list of recreational drugs. Rated R was widely thought to be one of the best rock albums of the year.

For their third album, Songs for the Deaf (2002), QOTSA were joined by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, now frontman of the Foo Fighters. The album was their biggest success yet, featuring minor hit singles in "No One Knows" and "Go with the Flow", winning rave reviews and gaining plenty of airplay. It has now sold over a million copies.

In 2004, Homme fired well-known bassist Nick Oliveri from the group, citing Oliveri's wild lifestyle as interfering with the band's work. With a new bassist, and former Danzig drummer Joey Castillo taking over from Grohl on drums, the new QOTSA released Lullabies to Paralyze in 2005, and Era Vulgaris followed in 2007. Both albums were well received by most critics and fans, although most agreed that Songs For The Deaf was still their best release.

Homme Returns To QOTSA: Reissue & New LP In Works

Jul, 9 2010

Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Josh Homme will soon by rivaling Jack White for the role as hardest working man in rock: as he helps prepare a 10th anniversary reissue of acclaimed second album Rated R, he's also reviving his record label and writing a sixth QOTSA album. Oh yeah, and he's in Them Crooked Vultures too. Rated R will be reissued on August 3rd backed with a disc containing B-sides (including covers of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" and The Kinks' "Who'll Be The Next In Line") and a live performance of the album recorded at the Reading festival just after the album's initial release. Meanwhile, Homme's Rekords Rekords label will soon be running again, with a Desert Sessions box-set planned for release, and a solo debut from QOTSA guitarist Alain Johannes. Them Crooked Vultures have recently finished touring their debut album, but the members are all reportedly keen on recording a second one. Before then, Homme will focus on the sixth Queens' LP. "The music is gonna go further down that strange and lovely path of Era Vulgaris," he told Rolling Stone. In other words: "It's all about wiggling hips."

Queens of the Stone Age

Being a music star is not all about liquor riders, mass adoration and groupies. Playing live gigs encourages all sorts of idiocy from the gig-going public including heckling, stage invading and the occasional launching of random missiles. It’s a hard life indeed, but every now and then, the band bites back. For instance, the current top Queens of the Stone Age video on YouTube shows what happens when you express your displeasure at Josh Homme – the expletive-filled rant will surely ring in that young heckler’s ears for some time. Grabbing at Amy Winehouse didn’t turn out too well for the fan involved, as she threw him a misaimed girly punch. Most recently, a Gym Class Heroes fan experienced an explosive 3rd degree assault when he shouted a racist comment at Travis McCoy; though this incident in particular has resulted in arrest for the band’s hapless frontman.
