Overview Edit

Too Tough to Die is the eighth album by the American punk band the Ramones, released in 1984 (see 1984 in music). It is the first album recorded with Richie Ramone. It is regarded as a particular triumph for Dee Dee Ramone, who wrote or co-wrote nine of the album's 13 tracks.

The album cover is a cultural reference to the movie A Clockwork Orange; the band backlit at the mouth of a tunnel echoes the scene in the film where Alex and his droogs attack a derelict. The song title "Durango 95" is also the name of the car driven by Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

The album includes the two Ramones songs "Wart Hog" and "Endless Vacation" sung by Dee Dee Ramone. The lyrics to "Wart Hog" were not allowed to be shown because the record company felt they were too offensive. This was the last critically acclaimed album by the Ramones, which ended their string of universally acclaimed albums that had started in 1976.

The song "Daytime Dilemma (Dangers of Love)" was covered by Eddie Vedder and Zeke for the We're a Happy Family—A Tribute to the Ramones album.

the terrorist threat is a modern fear."

No, that's not from a new 2004 song...that was Dee Dee Ramone writing "Planet Earth 1988." As he made abundantly clear on "Jungle," he was becoming the Ramones' new secret weapon, either penning or co-writing nine tracks on "Too Tough To Die." If the heaviness of "Mama's Boy" or the obvious band statement of the title track didn't get you, then nothing could. Even the obvious bids for radio acceptance, "Howling At The …

2 stars For completists only
Contains two songs that are classic Ramones ('Mama's Boy' and 'Too Tough To Die'). The rest is either overproduced misfires ('Chasing The Night') or attempts at pop commercialism ('Howling at the Moon', 'Daytime Dilemma'). You may wish to annoy your uptight friends by playing Dee-Dee's 'Wart Hog' at maximum volume.
