Ray LaMontagne is a US-born folk singer-songwriter, best known for his hit “Trouble”.
LaMontagne (pronounced Lamontaine) decided to pursue a career in the music business on hearing a Stephen Stills track, on the radio at work. He approached a number of record companies with his demo, and in 1999 got the attention of the publishing arm of Chrysalis. They teamed him up with producer Ethan Johns, and a contract with RCA followed.
Both LaMontagne’s albums have met with favourable reviews, with critics impressed by his mature lyrics and the distinctive quality of his voice, likened to a US Van Morrison. His debut was more successful in the UK than his homeland, charting in the Top 10, but the follow-up made the Top 30 of Billboard.
