Overview Edit

Freaky Styley is the second studio album by American alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on August 16, 1985 on EMI. Freaky Styley marks founding guitarist Hillel Slovak's studio album debut, following his return to the band earlier in the year. The album is also the last to feature drummer Cliff Martinez. Freaky Styley was produced by George Clinton, of Parliament-Funkadelic.

The album yielded four singles: "Jungle Man," "American Ghost Dance," "Catholic School Girls Rule" and "Hollywood (Africa)."

According to Jason Birchmeir, of Allmusic, Freaky Styley is "the closest the Red Hot Chili Peppers ever came to straight funk, [it] is the quirkiest, loosest and most playful album in their long and winding catalog. It's also one of the best, if also one of their least heard."

George Clinton could not have been a better individual to work with at the time. The Peppers' high energy and Clinton's funk vision is definitely a magical combo of music. You got to hand it to a band such as the Chili Peppers, who have tackled several genres and styles of music; and still keep it fresh; now matter what direction their music goes in next.

2 stars Chili Peppers' only funk album falls short
Somehow, the Peppers' collaboration with George Clinton has found a status as a sort of overlooked 'cult classic', but man, I just can't see why it's so loved. I guess you could say that it's the closest the band ever got to doing a pure funk album, since most of the band's efforts have more than enough trace of rock in them, with horns in the background and Flea's bass playing in perhaps its most prominent role ever. It's not even that I don't like this style either, but there should at least b…
