Biography

Edit

Richard Starkey is best known to the world as the Beatles' drummer. As an integral part of the revolutionary 'Fab Four', Ringo Starr helped change the world of pop music. Starr didn't join The Beatles until 1962, after original drummer Pete Best was sacked. As a drummer his proficiency is often under-rated, or derided as simplistic, but he remains an influence on many of today's best rock drummers. Most importantly, his drumming was consistent and reliable, and provided an expertly measured framework for Lennon and McCartney's perfect pop melodies. He was also the primary writer of "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden", and took the lead vocal role on several songs including: "Don't Pass Me By", "If You've Got Trouble", "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "Yellow Submarine".

After the Beatles split in 1970, Starr pursued a solo career. In the early 70's he enjoyed a succession of hit singles: "It Don't Come Easy", "Back Off Boogaloo", "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen"; and the accompanying albums were minor hits. 1973's Ringo was his biggest seller and commonly considered his best solo effort.

In the mid-80s, Starr became known to young children as the narrator of the popular TV Series Thomas The Tank Engine. He has continued to write, record and tour, as well as drumming on records by the other Beatles, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and others.

Ringo Starr

Oct, 14 2008

Any pop or rock star will tell you it's tiring to tour: the fatigue and tension brought about by months on the road has split up countless bands and led many others to find solace in drugs or alcohol. But here's a new one - did you know it was strenuous to sign, or arduous to answer? Well it is for ex-Beatles, anyway, as Ringo Starr has posted a video online asking his fans not to send him things to sign, or in fact any fanmail at all. "I want to tell you, please, after the 20th of October do not send fanmail... I'm warning you with peace and love, but I have too much to do." The plea should come as no surprise to viewers of The Simpsons, who knew that Ringo was struggling to keep up seventeen years ago. In the prophetic 1991 episode "Brush With Greatness", Ringo explained that he replied to every piece of fan mail he ever got, as he finally replied to a portrait sent by Marge in the mid-60s: "Dear Marge. Thanks for the fab painting of yours truly. I hung it on me wall. You're quite an artist. In answer to your question, yes, we do have hamburgers and fries in England. But we call French fries 'chips'. Love, Ringo. PS: Forgive the lateness of my reply."
