Biography

Edit

Richard Hugh "Ritchie" Blackmore (born 14 April 1945 in Weston-super-Mare) is an English guitarist, who was a founding member of hard rock bands Deep Purple and Rainbow. Blackmore left Deep Purple first in 1975 and for a second time in 1993 due to a growing rift between Blackmore and other members in spite of renewed commercial success. His current band is the Renaissance-influenced Blackmore's Night.

Ritchie Blackmore

It’s not always easy to make your own way in the world when the legacy of a celebrity parent hangs over you – for every Miley Cyrus, there’s a Brooke Hogan. Of course, it’s going to be harder still if your parent removes the right for you to use your own name, as Richie Blackmore has recently done. It’s been a long time since Richie was part of the classic Deep Purple line-up, and Rainbow’s main man; these days he’s far too busy making renaissance rock with Blackmore’s Night. However, he’s still mighty protective of his history so when his son Jürgen Blackmore recruited a bunch of ex-Rainbow musicians and created the band Over The Rainbow, Richie became a little antsy and insisted that Jürgen couldn’t use his own name. Over The Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner revealed that it took sight of Jürgen’s birth certificate to set the record straight, “he ended up sending a copy of that to Ritchie, to prove he had every right to the name. Thankfully, that’s all behind us now, and everything’s back on an even keel.” With Over The Rainbow hoping to play some UK shows in 2010, it’s surely no bad thing that the guitarist is allowed to use his name in promotional material.
