The Stooges' guitarist Ron Asheton has died, aged 60. He was found at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Tuesday morning, and is believed to have suffered a heart attack. As a founding member of The Stooges, Asheton had a massive impact on rock music. They formed in Detroit in 1967 when psychedelic rock and pop were dominant forces, but their fast, aggressive and abrasive guitar sound, and singer Iggy Pop's outrageous on-stage performances, earned them a dedicated live following. Although the albums The Stooges, Fun House and Raw Power (as Iggy and The Stooges) were commercial and critical flops at the time, they grew in stature and influenced countless heavy rock, punk and metal musicians in following years. Asheton was later named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 30 greatest guitarists ever. The Stooges reformed in 2003 and toured extensively, before releasing The Weirdness in 2007; but it's their three seminal albums between 1969 and 1973, and their raucous live shows, for which they're remembered.
