Rory Gallagher Rises Again
Jun, 4 2010
If you’re fond of impressive guitar work, you’ll know all about Hendrix, marvel at the virtuoso skills of Vai, but you might know less about Irish bluesman Rory Gallagher. Though he died in 1995 aged only 47, Gallagher’s influence continues to be felt, and they’re pretty proud of him in his Irish hometown of Ballyshannon, County Donegal.
But the sad truth is that Gallagher was never able to play to his Ballyshannon companions. Speaking to the Irish Times, his brother Donal recalls: “I remember he saw a poster for the Ballyshannon Folk Festival and he said the one thing he would love [was] if they had asked him to play at it. I said I could make a phone call and he said, ‘No, No.’ It’s just if they had asked him he would have done it for them. He never played the Ballyshannon Folk Festival, sadly.”
However, since his death, the small Irish town has organized an annual festival in his honor, and such is the reputation of the man that the Rory Festival threatens to eclipse the folk festival at which he once longed to play. And it is this festival which has finally afforded Rory the chance to come back to Ballyshannon; his memory is finally being honored with the erection of a Rory Monument in the town. Unveiled during the 9th annual Rory Festival, the life-sized bronze of the guitarist will preside over proceedings, offering a bittersweet reminder of the gig Rory never played.
