Overview Edit

2112 is the fourth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1976. The Toronto dates of the 2112 tour were recorded and released as All The World's a Stage in September 1976.

The album 2112 features an eponymous seven-part suite written by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, with lyrics written by Neil Peart. The suite tells a dystopian story set in the year 2112. Since the album is named after the suite it is sometimes described as a concept album. Technically it is not, as the songs on the second side are completely unrelated to the plot of the suite. Rush repeated this arrangement on the 1978 album Hemispheres.

2112 is one of two Rush albums listed in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (the other being Moving Pictures). In 2006 a poll of Planet Rock listeners picked 2112 as the definitive Rush album.

4 stars Condescending Review from Amazon not quite accurate.
I'm no die-hard Rush fan, but I know my rock history & Amazon's review(of an Amazon essential recording no less, now in the R&R HoF Definitive 200 albums list [#198])by Michael Ruby doesn't quite do justice to either the band or the album. The band has been around now for more than 35 years, but critics still harp on the same things: poor vocals, pretentious lyrics, & nerdy drummers, failing to take the band's progression into account & trivializing their early works.

Further, if someone only r…

3 stars Great title song...why do so many people misunderstand it?
Rewind: 1975 - Rush had high hopes for Caress of Steel, but faced savage criticism against that album, and since it tanked, the supporting tour was labelled "down the tubes", as in demotion back to the club circuit.

Rush didn't get mad, they got even. The 2112 epic (side 1 on the vinyl LP, for those who don't know from vinyl) has nothing to do with futurism, contrary to appearances...it is a criticism of 1976 pop culture(the priests) and the impassive music media (Temples of Syrinx and their gre…
