"Countdown" Ready For Launch
Aug, 26 2010
In November, the space shuttle Discovery will launch for its last mission before being decommissioned. Astronauts on this mission, like on every other since the early days of the Apollo flights, will be woken by NASA’s specially chosen “wake-up song,” but this time NASA have given the public the opportunity to choose which will be played.
Visitors to the NASA site can choose from a selection of 40 tracks, all of which have featured as wake-up songs on previous missions. The list of artists is eclectic, but features an unsurprising quantity of sky or space or flying references, such as “Mr Blue Sky” (ELO), “Learn to Fly” (Foo Fighters), “Rocket Man” (Elton John), “Kryptonite” (3 Doors Down) and – of course – the “Star Trek Theme Song” (Alexander Courage), which is riding high with over 20% of the current vote.
However, leading the poll is Rush’s “Countdown,” which was written for the Signals album in response to the group’s experience of attending the 1981 inaugural launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia, and features audio recorded from the control room during that day. The tune has already featured as the wake-up song on the last flight of the Columbia, and it now looks set to be the last song for the Discovery. Voting closes on November 1.
