Biography

Edit

Rush is a Canadian rock band that has evolved over its thirty-year career, embracing new styles and ideas along the way. Their consistency has resulted in total record sales that put them on the list of rock’s best-selling bands.

Rush were formed in 1968 in Toronto, Canada by Alex Lifeson. There were a number of personnel changes before the line-up settled on Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. Rush recorded its first album in 1974.

The band have adopted various musical styles and themes over their career, from their rock beginnings on the self-titled debut album, through a variety of different styles, and back to rock again. Their early output explored utopian themes with elements of sci-fi and fantasy. With a steady increase in popularity their 1977 album, A Farewell to Kings, went gold in the US.

They attracted more fans with their new wave and reggae influenced album Permanent Waves which brought them their first Top 5. Their next album, Moving Pictures, introduced elements of ska and subsequently sold in sufficient quantities to be quadruple platinum.

Rush had an enforced 5 year studio and touring break from 1997 after the tragic deaths of Neil Peart's daughter and wife, in 1997 and 1998 respectively. During this period they released a live album Different Stages and rumours were rife that the band had split. The band re-entered the studio in 2001, and by the following year they were ready to release Vapor Trails and embark on an extensive supporting tour. By way of a change they recorded a mini album of cover versions of tracks by bands cited as their early influences including Cream and The Who.

After their 30th Anniversary tour they returned to the studio to record Snakes & Arrows, which was released in 2007 and a double live album of the tour was released in summer 2008.

"Countdown" Ready For Launch

Aug, 26 2010

In November, the space shuttle Discovery will launch for its last mission before being decommissioned. Astronauts on this mission, like on every other since the early days of the Apollo flights, will be woken by NASA’s specially chosen “wake-up song,” but this time NASA have given the public the opportunity to choose which will be played. Visitors to the NASA site can choose from a selection of 40 tracks, all of which have featured as wake-up songs on previous missions. The list of artists is eclectic, but features an unsurprising quantity of sky or space or flying references, such as “Mr Blue Sky” (ELO), “Learn to Fly” (Foo Fighters), “Rocket Man” (Elton John), “Kryptonite” (3 Doors Down) and – of course – the “Star Trek Theme Song” (Alexander Courage), which is riding high with over 20% of the current vote. However, leading the poll is Rush’s “Countdown,” which was written for the Signals album in response to the group’s experience of attending the 1981 inaugural launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia, and features audio recorded from the control room during that day. The tune has already featured as the wake-up song on the last flight of the Columbia, and it now looks set to be the last song for the Discovery. Voting closes on November 1.
