5 stars Warms the heart.
I am not American. Nor do I usually buy this kind of music. I heard a few tracks by accident in a music store. But... we live in dark times, someone singing about friendship and brotherhood makes me feel that there are some good people out there. Its simple messages warm the heart. If the heart is true, the music is beautiful no matter whether the music is rock, rap... or in this case American Folk Music.

3 stars Good--but it doesn't hold together for me as well as the reviews described
I got the CD because I like Ry Cooder and like the concept of a story-CD. For me, "Chavez Ravine" felt like a more cohesive body of material, though.

I cannot fault the musicianship and the storyline is fascinating. Anyone who has a past anchored in the Dust Bowl area will identify with the stories---Cooder must have done his research from testimonials of folks who'd been there.
