Overview Edit

Demolition is the third studio album by alt-country singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, released on September 24, 2002 on Lost Highway. The album comprises tracks from Adams' unreleased studio albums, The Suicide Handbook, The Pinkheart Sessions and 48 Hours. In 2009, Adams stated: "I don’t much care for this record. The rock songs are plodding and the quiet songs belonged to better records to make Gold as a compromise then to have to watch those records get broken up for Demolition was heartbreaking."

At 45 min. (compared to the sprawling "Gold"), this is a more focused serving of Ryan's wandering mind and music. "Nuclear" (issued as a single in Europe) is a great start. The Ethan Johns-produced and influenced t…

3 stars a hit-or-miss foray into different territory
Despite Ryan Adams' contentions that he's not big into country or folk music, it's definitely what he's best at. Heartbreaker and Gold had this beautiful threadbare denim cowboy undertone, and his Whiskeytown stuff was straight alt-country class. Demolition definitely resembles what it is, a polished collection of demos, on which he tries some new tacks. In some cases, like "Nuclear," it works. In other cases, like "Starting to Hurt," he sounds like a Goo Goo Dolls out-take. The lyrics aren't hi…
