This workmanlike blues-rock band became a favorite with American audiences while never achieving popularity at home in Britain. Kim Simmonds ruled the group with an iron hand and hired and fired members regularly. Though never very steady Savoy Brown gave us a number of great musicians.
The 1966 original lineup was Kim Simmonds (guitar, vocals); Bryce Portius (vocals); Martin Stone (guitar); Ray Chappell (bass); Loe Mannings (drums); Bob Hall (keyboards).
"Shake Down" (1967) was their first release, but by 1968 Simmonds had replaced almost everybody. Chris Youdlen (vocals); Lonesone Dave Peverette (guitars); River Jobe (bass), Roger Earl, and again in 1968 Tone Stevens (bass). The lineup lasted for one year when Youdlen left, only to have another turnover in 1971, when Peverett, Stevens and Earl left for Foghat.
There were numerous lineup changes until 1973 when Simmonds announced the end of Savoy Brown.
