MacGowan Shows Us His Green Fingers
Dec, 1 2009
It was a little shocking when Johnny Rotten abandoned his punk soul in favor of making a quick buck advertising butter on British television, so it’s hard to know what to make of the latest TV-related news about Shane MacGowan. As the growling, toothless frontman of Irish folk-punks The Pogues, MacGowan failed to launch a thousand ships, but ignited more than a little fire in the rebellious bellies of his fans. However, like Johnny Rotten (or John Lydon to his mother), he’s now hitting a comfortable middle age and has decided to diversify into the more gentle environs of gardening television. MacGowan and his wife Victoria Mary Clarke will attempt to grow their own vegetables in the series “Victoria and Shane Grow Their Own.” The show, which will broadcast on Irish station RTE on December 8, is not likely to be a slick affair given that neither of the stars has much gardening experience, but the viewing figures should be high. Unfortunately, RTE has no plans to broadcast the show outside Ireland, which must be a disappointment for all the old reprobates outside the Emerald Isle who need advice on how to settle down to life in the potting shed.
