Overview Edit

Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits is the first compilation album from Simon & Garfunkel, released on June 14, 1972 well after the pair broke up.

The album was a unique mix of original studio recordings and four previously unreleased live recordings. The album's minimalist packaging does not specifically date the latter, however, the live versions of "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" and "Kathy's Song" included on Greatest Hits were also included on the 2008 album Live 1969. The liner notes to Live 1969 state that these two songs were both recorded at a November 1969 concert in St. Louis, Missouri. It's likely, therefore, that all four live recordings found on Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits date from the duo's November 1969 North American tour. Regardless, the live settings benefitted the emotional straightforwardness of Paul Simon's lyrics on "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" and "Homeward Bound", while "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" rang with newfound purpose due to the simple purity of Art Garfunkel's vocal.

The remaining ten studio songs comprise eight singles released between 1965 and 1972, "America" being issued as a single several years after its appearance as a track on the Bookends album, and two album tracks, "Bookends" and "The Boxer". All but "America" and "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" made the Top Ten, with the latter peaking at #11, and "Mrs. Robinson" topped the chart aided by its appearance in Mike Nichols' hit movie The Graduate. "The Sound of Silence" and "Bridge over Troubled Water" both peaked at #1 as singles in their studio versions, and "The Boxer" peaked as a single at #7 in an edited form.

5 stars There are more comprehensive collections, but none better
More than once I have panned re-issues of albums on CD that added nothing to the original. My usual reason is that a CD can hold 80 minutes of music and a vinyl album typically had 38 to 48 minutes of music. My criticism increases with a "greatest" or "best of" collection because there are almost always more songs that could or should have been added. My criticism of content should extend to this album as well, but this album embodies Simon and Garfunkel's peak popularity and its value is as muc…

1 stars Superb Music-Lousy Compilation
The songs on this album truly represent the best of Simon and Garfunkel. Unfortunately, someone decided it would be a good idea to insert "live" versions of some of the songs. Most of these live versions are inferior to the original studio recordings, not to mention that it does not mention anywhere on the album jakcet which cuts are live, or even that ANY of them are live. This alone makes this one of the worst Greatest hits albums ever eleased, which is tragic, considering the enormous talent …
