Overview Edit

Haunting the Chapel is an EP released by the thrash metal band Slayer in 1984 through Metal Blade and Enigma Records. Slayer's debut album Show No Mercy became Metal Blade's highest selling, leading to producer Brian Slagel wanting to release an EP. Recorded in Hollywood the recording process proved difficult when recording drums in a studio without carpet, although it resulted in drummer Dave Lombardo meeting Gene Hoglan who was to become an influence in his drumming style and speed.

Although originally featuring three songs, the record evidences a marked evolution from the style of their previous album, Show No Mercy, and is considered the first demonstration of the band's "classic" style displayed on later albums and is often described as a "stepping stone." The songs "Captor of Sin" and "Chemical Warfare" are regularly featured on the band's live set list. It has been announced that Chemical Warfare will appear in the upcoming game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

5 stars A must have for a Slayer fan !!!
This is a fantastic EP by Slayer. Even though it only has for tunes, it is a classic. Two out of the four songs were also featured in Slayer's live Album Decade of Agressions which was released many years after it. For you to have an idea, the full length classic album Hell Awaits, which is more or less from the same time landed only one song in the live album. Following are coments of the songs individually ranked from best to really great but not as fantastic as the one above:

CHEMICAL WARFARE…

3 stars Good, not great
"Chemical Warfare" is one of the best Slayer songs. "Aggressive Perfecter" is one of the worst. "Captor of Sin" and "Haunting the Chapel" are strong but not mind-blowing songs. That's it, it is only about 15 minutes long. This ep really just lays the groundwork for their best album "Hell Awaits" and mostly gets away from the goofiness of "Show No Mercy." Can't really give it more then 3 stars, but don't let that stop you from getting it if you already have the other important Slayer albums.
