Overview Edit

Seasons in the Abyss is the fifth studio album by the thrash metal band Slayer. It was released in 1990 through Def American Records, and later through American Recordings after the company changed its name. It was Dave Lombardo's last studio album with Slayer, until his return in 2006 with the release of Christ Illusion. Seasons in the Abyss is Slayer's third major record label release. Seasons in the Abyss is one of few albums to be issued with a Parental Advisory label despite the virtual absence of profanity unlike other Slayer albums; however, the lyrics depict violent acts. This album was also released the same day and year as Testament's album Souls of Black. War Ensemble is featured on the setlist for the rhythm game Guitar Hero: Metallica, where it is notorious for being one of the game's most difficult songs on guitar, bass, and drums.

5 stars Amazing Disc
From the blistering opening track "War Ensemble", to the crushing "Dead Skin Mask", to the title track reminiscent of Black Sabbath, this album is an entirely different experience from the "Reign in Blood" era Slayer, but still just as powerful and memorable. While the guitar work is still highly technical controlled chaos, and Araya's voice seems more mature, Lombardo's chops on drums are, as always, incredible. One particularly memorable moment is during a breakdown in the middle of "Spirit in…

3 stars Sounds good in a bad way
Slayer is ok, I remember seasons in the abyss playing on headbangers ball and to me was no more better then when they played Overkill or Sepultura. The songs to me that really are decent are tracks 3,4,5,7 and 10. The rest of the songs to me are just thrash speed metal. I can find lots of influences from other bands in these songs and their album-- but to me the group stands on line with Pentagram. The riffs to me are nearly identical in tempo and style. They talk about black obscure spooky thin…
