Overview Edit

Land of Cockayne is the final album by the band Soft Machine, released in 1981. By this point, the band contained none of its original members. The title refers to the medieval land of plenty.

The album came about as the result of a project based around top session musicians in which Jenkins and Marshall had been involved. The ad hoc band, Rollercoaster, had recently recorded the Stevie Wonder tribute album Wonderin' and decided to record another album together. Many of the musicians included on the Cockayne album would make up Soft Machine's final live line-up which played a six-night residency at Ronnie Scott's in 1984.

Jazz rock but not as heavy as the previous Karl Jenkins led softs e.g. Seven, softs et al. This album has some catchy tunes but surely an unfair comparison with the other classic softs albums. I would still listen to this album over and over again because it gives me bliss and enjoyment

3 stars soft and mellow softs
I can understand why many people don't rate this album as highly as other later Soft Machine records, but there's still a fair bit in it.

It was really Karl Jenkins' solo project, in the sense that he wrote the music and conducted the orchestral backing. In many ways it seemed to be the beginning of him bridging from his background with Nucleus and Softs into the classical idiom. So the record has a different feel to it: it's more mellow and often slower, even soundtrack material, but there's lo…
