When I bought Something Corporate's Audioboxer EP, I knew absolutely nothing about them. I was in my local record store with exactly seven dollars in my pocket... I wasn't planning on buying anything, until I saw that this CD was only five bucks. Figuring I couldn't go wrong for that price, I decided to buy it. Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised.
Something Corporate instantly impressed me with the catchy opening tune "Hurricane." It blended piano, guitar, and melodic vocals perfectly. This quickly became one of my favorite tracks on the six-song EP.
The lead single from the band is track number two: "If You See Jordan." Again, it's catchy and enjoyable. It's a bit whiny... but the perfect anthem for anyone who was picked on as a kid. (I have a story, a bitter anthem/For everyone to hear about this kid who just don't like me/And that's a solid fact/They say he's hunting me, and as you see/I'm all swelled up with fear/Cause I can't get him off my back)
"Punk Rock Princess" is another great track, one of the standouts. It sounds much more raw and unpolished than the others. It's followed by "Bad Day" and "Little," two tracks that I like, but don't love. I never grew attached to these two songs (especially "Little"), though I do listen to them often. Both are admirable efforts, but they don't match up to some of the other songs. Still, both are better than most mainstream efforts.
Which brings me to the greatest song Audioboxer has to offer: "Walking By." It's an incredibly beautiful song that tells a thoughtful story. Present here are some wonderful lyrics, and some absolutely amazing vocal work. Simply beautiful, this song was worth the price of the CD alone.
Something Corporate is a talented band that has a great ability to blend many different sounds into one and make it work. Audioboxer is a wonderful example of how music should be done.
