5 stars best youth album
ok, here it is, plain and simple--goo is (in my opinion) the best out of the 4 or 5 "best" youth albums(washing machine, d dream nation, dirty,....whatever). ive read lies about washing machine. everyone thinks its the best and that its ground breaking when in fact its at best good.it only has about 3 great tracks. and, day dream and dirty are both amazing but after a while i noticed that evey song sounds some what the same. goo on the other hand is PURE gold. here, the writing and playing is th…

3 stars Where to next for SY?
This is the sound of Sonic Youth figuring out where to go after the landmark Daydream Nation. The logical progression was to go onto a major label, but Goo is unconvincing despite containing all the trademark aspects of their sound. Some of Goo sounds like Daydream Nation outtakes, but the band would sharpen their focus on their next release, Dirty, which fully embraces the punk/grunge sound only hinted at here. Somewhat overrated in their illustrious canon, but still recommended.

Trivia Edit

  • "Goo" was Sonic Youth's eighth album, and their first for DGC/Geffen. The album was their major label debut, and with arena rock staples like "Kool Thing" and "Dirty Boots" deep in its grooves, it allowed Sonic Youth to enter the mainstream world, destroy everything in their path, and emerge victorious, riding the top 10 charts to sonic stardom and glory....... or at least get them the opening spot on the 1991 Crazy Horse tour.
  • The second album to be given the expanded reissue treatment was "Goo", SY's major label debut, and this set is no less essential than 2003's "Dirty". Although the 8-track demos for this album had already been released, they are featured here superbly remixed from the original tapes, and sound infinitely better than the 'bootleg' editions. Several other Goo-era tracks appear.
  • From FILTER magazine 2006 SY discography self-commentary: "conceived and realized in the transition from self-management to whole new ballgame. $$$ for candy-floss. taking off in any direction available. one of major-labeldom's weirdest moments. features "Disappearer" and the oft requested "Kool Thing". cover art by Raymond Pettibon. - TM"
  • SCREAMING FIELDS OF SONIC LOVE era magazine ad: 1990 GOO conceived and realized in the transition from self-management to whole new ballgame. $$$ for candy-floss. taking off in any direction available. one of major labeldom's weirdest moments. features "Disappearer" and the classic "Kool Thing." cover art by Raymond Pettibone."
  • First 3000 European LPs came w/ free 7" containing "Kool Thing" 8-track demo and an interview (same interview as "Sonic Youth Interview Soundsheet"). Some Japanese versions have live bonus tracks from Dirty Boots EP. Vinyl etchings: * Side 1: "EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE" * Side 2: "TIPPER FUCKS OZZIE"
  • Mexican release has song titles in Spanish: * Botas Sucias * Tunica * Maria-Santa * Cosa Fria * Mota * Mi Amigo Goo * Desaparecido * Mildred Pierce * Mpila Gran Obra Cinderella * Scooter Y Jinx * Expuesto Al Titanio
  • Kim and Thurston once again trade musical roles: she plays guitar and he plays bass on "My Friend Goo" (as well as the non-LP "Lee #2"). Check out some of the weird pirate cassette versions -- one even has "Mote" and "Titanium Expose" reversed as respective side closers(!).
