5 stars underrated, often forgotten classic
Having bought several Sonic Youth (based on constant advice to get into their stuff) at the same time, I was blown away at just how good and amazing their materail is, as well as different each time around. While WM may not be the most innovative or lyrically powerful as other SY albums, it sets a mood which seems to give a modern touch to 60s suburbia or something, with a good mixture of the beautiful and the deranged...it's almost like it's through the eyes of a lost teenager running through a…

3 stars Hmmm...
I own this CD. And I enjoy aspects of it. Some of it, I may not like the SOUND, but I appreciate the band and what they have contributed to indie rock/experimental music/art rock.

I only gave this one 3 stars because 1)I only like half the songs so I wouldn't give it 5 based on my own tastes, and, 2)it's hard to rate experiemtnal/art rock like Sonic Youth. So I'll take a stand back from my own likings to rate this just as it is.

There are some high points to this. Like others have said, The Di…

Trivia Edit

  • "Washing Machine" is the first record to almost exclusively feature Kim on guitar rather than bass, and contains some of their lengthiest material since "Goo" and "Daydream Nation", including the epic "Diamond Sea" which drifts onward for an unprecedented 20 minutes, still the longest track on any SY album .
  • From FILTER magazine 2006 SY discography self-commentary: "It was so great to be out of NY recording somewhere else. Things were relaxed there . We ate a lot of barbeque from Payne's. I can't believe the record ever got recorded. It's one of my favorite's. Coko was about 8 months old. She met her first Elvis impersonator there. - KG"
  • Though not executed quite as extremely as on the previous 2 albums, Lee and Thurston's guitars are once again isolated to their own speakers -- Lee is in the left, Thurston is in the right.
  • Though "Thumb" (the working title for "Saucer-Like") does appear on the preliminary running order on the back of the album, the title "Trouble Girl" made it all the way to the promotional versions of the CD.
