Biography

Edit

Along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden were one of the Seattle-based grunge bands who dominated American rock music in the first half of the 1990s. Their 1994 album Superunknown is a classic of 90s rock.

Soundgarden were formed in 1984 by Chris Cornell (drums, vocals), Kim Thayil (guitar) and Hiro Yamamoto (bass). After an EP, Screaming Life (1987), they released their debut album Ultramega OK in 1988, which earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Louder Than Love was released in 1989 before the previous EP was re-released with a further EP, Fopp, which had been released initially in 1988.

After a short detour for Cornell and Cameron to record as Temple of the Dog with members of Pearl Jam (formed to honor their friend, Mother Love Bone's Andy Wood who had died of an overdose), Badmotorfinger was released in 1991. This release was overshadowed by the worldwide success of Nirvana's Nevermind. However, Soundgarden was able to bask in some reflected glory as Nirvana's new fans began to pay attention to Soundgarden's similar sound.

They had only to wait until their next release, Superunknown (1994) for the spotlight to turn to them fully. The single "Black Hole Sun" was particularly successful, hitting the higher reaches of the US and UK charts, and Superunknown became widely regarded as a landmark of the grunge era.

Down on the Upside (1996) was Soundgarden's last studio album. It moved away from the grunge sound which had been their trademark, but the change of direction was not what they all wanted. Rifts formed which finally cracked the band open. During the tour for the album in 1997, the band split.

Each of the band members went their separate ways, including Cornell's lead part in Audioslave. Drummer Cameron continued his role as Pearl Jam's drummer. A-Sides was their post break-up swan song until 2010's compilation release,Telephantasm accompanied by the news that the band had reformed.

Now late-2010, Soundgarden has played a handful of shows and appearances on late night TV.

Soundgarden to Play the Gorge

May, 5 2011

In news of things that make me go “Squeeeeee!,” Soundgarden is confirmed to be playing the Gorge this July 30. The original Seattle sludge-rockers will be supported by Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon, and The Meat Puppets. Wow, that’s quite a Saturday!! Such a tasty lineup, it almost makes me look forward to paying $12 for a tallboy of PBR. Tickets go on sale Saturday May 14, but a little birdie told me the pre-sale is next Tuesday, May 10 at 4PM. -Court

Soundgarden Unleashing the Fury with "Live on I-5"

Jan, 19 2011

For the first time since forming 27 years ago, Soundgarden will be releasing an album of live cuts. Titled Live on I-5, a reference to Interstate 5, which bisects Seattle and runs all the way down to SoCal, the compilation contains material from their incendiary 1996 West Coast tour. The band had originally hoped to release the album in 1997, but instead, bowing from internal and external pressures, they broke up. The quartet had rented a mobile studio, hired touring engineer Adam Kasper, and recorded the West Coast gigs on 2" analog tape. Now, almost 15 years later, on March 22, 2011, the 17 tracks will be “unleashed.” The grunge pioneers reformed in 2010, released the CD/DVD compilation Telephantasm, featuring singles, album cuts, live material and the previously unavailable "Black Rain,” and completely killed as they headlined Lollapalooza in Chicago last summer. Check out some HD video here. **UPDATE 1/20 PST: Chris Cornell has just announced dates for his first-ever solo acoustic tour, which will feature the singer performing stripped-back versions of Soundgarden tunes. The 25-day trek kicks off on April 1 in Austin, TX and wraps May 6 in San Diego, CA. -Court

Members of the band have other commitments – drummer Matt Cameron has been in Pearl Jam for 12 years, singer Chris Cornell moonlighted with Audioslave and solo projects, as did bassist Ben Shepherd – but guitarist Kim Thayil told Blabbermouth, "definitely this is the thing that we're most excited about." -Court
