Biography

Edit

Spinal Tap is the British heavy metal band that never really was. They were the subject of the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in which they delightfully parodied the triumphs and tragedies of life on the road with a rock band, culminating in a painful break-up over an eighteen inch high Stonehenge. The band members are guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). There has been a long succession of drummers, though this tenuous and risky position is never held for long.

The film became cult viewing and such is the level of geekery that it can be difficult to know where the parody stops and the reality begins. Of those indisputable facts is the release of the soundtrack album This Is Spinal Tap in 1984. A follow-up Break Like The Wind was released in 1992. This time rock luminaries were roped in with Cher, Slash and Joe Satriani all sharing the joke.

Spinal Tap

Jan, 7 2009

The credibility of Berklee College of Music, one of the most revered US music schools, has been served by the addition of two esteemed musicians to its board of trustees, one more conventional than the other. There's no peculiarity about the addition of Paul Simon, half of the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel and multi-platinum selling musician in his own right. A more unexpected addition is Nigel Tufnel, lead guitarist of legendary rockers Spinal Tap and proud owner of an amplifier which goes all the way up to 11. The archetypal This Is Spinal Tap mockumentary band embraced every metal cliché of the era and went on to release two real albums in addition to their fictional catalogue; which included the critically panned 'Shark Sandwich', 'Smell The Glove' with its "none more black" censored cover art, and the misjudged psychedelic album, 'Spinal Tap Sings "(Listen to the) Flower People" and Other Favourites.' Most importantly, the addition of Tufnell’s alter-ego, actor Christopher Guest, to the Berklee board brings the total number of trustees to a satisfying and wholly appropriate 11.
