Stephen Curtis Chapman is a US-born Christian singer-songwriter, whose popularity has earned him a slew of awards and gold and platinum disks.
Chapman dropped medical studies to pursue his love of music. He moved from Indiana to Nashville and began working at Opryland USA on a musical show. He spent his free time writing material. One of the tracks he wrote was taken up by a gospel group, the Imperials. That was the start of a successful songwriting career. His songs have been performed by artists including Roger Whittaker and Glen Campbell.
His own releases have led to a string of Top 10 singles and albums on the Contemporary Christian charts, and awards aplenty from the Gospel Music Association. He also received the Best Pop Gospel Album Grammy for For the Sake of the Call. The Grammys also came calling for the follow-up, The Great Adventure, on which Chapman made a move towards the mainstream. He incorporated rap and a heavier rock sound and attracted new fans in the process, the album eventually went gold.
Heaven in the Real World marked the beginning of Chapman’s appearance on the mainstream charts, and subsequent releases had an increasing impact on the Billboard 200. All about Love and All Things New were his first incursions into the Top 30.
