Stone Sour was formed in 1992 by Corey Taylor (vocals) and Joel Ekman (drums), later joined by James Root (guitar) and Shawn Economaki (bass).
Three demo tapes were recorded between 1992 and 1996, but in 1997 they disbanded when Taylor left to join SlipknoT. He was joined in SlipknoT by Root and Economaki (who became SlipknoT's stage manager).
In 2000 Josh Rand came to Taylor with some songs he'd been working on and, with Taylor still working with SlipknoT, Taylor and Rand wrote together, fleshing out the portfolio. The result was a reformed Stone Sour, a record deal with Roadrunner and an album in 2002 Stone Sour. The album went Gold, largely on the strength of the track "Bother" which had been used on the Spider-Man soundtrack. With the success under their belt, Taylor and Root went back on tour with SlipknoT.
With SlipknoT on a hiatus, the members of Stone Sour found the time to begin to record their follow-up album in 2006. But just as they were beginning to record Eckman had to leave the band, -- his son was very ill (and later died) - so Ray Mayorga (Soulfly) joined them. With the band complete again they finished the album, Come What(ever) May, and released it later that year. The album peaked at No.4 on the US Billboard charts and they embarked on a significant touring schedule throughout much of 2006 and into 2007.
