Overview Edit

Edge of the Century is an album by Styx, released in 1990 (see 1990 in music). It was the first Styx album featuring A&M solo artist Glen Burtnik on guitar, and the only album to feature the Dennis DeYoung/James Young/Glen Burtnik/Chuck Panozzo/John Panozzo lineup.

It spawned three singles. "Show Me the Way" was written by DeYoung and peaked at #3, due to the Gulf War Troops adopting the song as an anthem. Some radio stations played an edited version with the children of troops singing. "Love Is the Ritual", written by Burtnik and Plinky, and "Love at First Sight", written by Burtnik, DeYoung, and Young, were also released as singles, but neither garnered the same amount of success as "Show Me the Way."

The album was a certified GOLD record by the RIAA.

I love Tommy Shaw, and Damn Yankees to this day is still one of my favorite rock bands of all time despite their short run. Nonetheless, while Tommy was doing his thing with Ted Nugent and the boys, Styx was also creating one very fine pop/rock album. While this might not quite stand up to their classic stuff, it was still a very refreshing, enjoyable listen around 1990-91 when it came out.

Glen Burtnik was Tommy Shaw's replacement, and he brought a great energy to the band for this effort. To t…

3 stars Come back does not come far enough back
This album was released about six years after "Kilroy Was Here," which turned out to be a swan song for the original group. A number of reviewers in various places have called this album Styx's "comeback" album. What I find interesting is that there seems to be a nearly continuous spectrum of ratings from one star to five stars. The album peaked at #63 on the Billboard 200, which also indicates a mixed reaction from fans, though one song from this album was a significant hit for Styx.
