Sufjan Returns With Long EP & LP
Aug, 29 2010
Indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has emerged from years of near-silence with a new hour-long EP and the announcement of a new album within a few days.
All Delighted People is available for just $5 and is described as an EP despite being an hour long. Stevens' label Asthmatic Kitty have also confirmed his new studio album The Age of Adz (pronounced "odds") will be released on October 12.
While Stevens once said he'd record an album about every U.S. State -- and seemed to be following that path with the themed albums Michigan (2003) and Illinois (2005) -- the new album is inspired by outsider artist Royal Robertson.
According to the press release, the album shows "an obsession with cosmic fantasies (space, heaven, aliens, love)," which were themes repeated in Robertson's art.

Sufjan Stevens

Music can be so much more than pleasant sounds: for some it can be a lifestyle choice, it can identify you to your peer group, and it can even alienate you from others. Music has the power to stratify society, and if some people are to be believed, to give great big hints about your intelligence. Virgil Griffith, a 25 year old grad student at Caltech, trawled through a pile of Facebook data extracting SAT scores and music preferences. The title of the study, “musicthatmakesyoudumb,” says it all about the seriousness of his findings, and though the science is highly dubious, the results are horribly fascinating. They suggest that you keep your love of Beyoncé and The Used well under you hat if you want to be taken seriously at Mensa; whereas it would appear that all the cleverest kids love Beethoven, though Sufjan Stevens isn’t far behind. If these are the kind of things that concern you, now might be a good time to edit the tags on your mp3 player!
